James Whiting 1829 - 1907

James was my three greats uncle and was born about 1829 in either Carlton or Kelsale. On 13th October 1855 he married Hannah Girling, the second child of Eber Girling and his wife Sarah Mayhew. Hannah was born in Benhall where she was baptised 26th February 1837 - the year Victoria became Queen of the United Kingdom and Empress of India.
After the birth of their first child, Richard, the young family moved to Badingham, where another eight children were born and baptised.

The 1861 census lists James and his family in living in Badingham and he is shown to be a farmer of 15 acres. It is interesting to note that both his parents, James and Mildred were living with them.
According to the 1871 census they were living at 5 Bowling Green, Badingham and his parents had moved to Kelsale.
The 1881 census records the family still living in Badingham. James is recorded as an agricultural labourer and his eldest son, Richard, as a blacksmith.
The 1891 census is particularly interesting in as much that James was a widow and had moved to the village of Sibton, about 6 miles from Badingham, with his daughter Phoebe. He also had four grandchildren living with him - Hannah and Adelaide, both aged 8, Frederick, aged 6 and Sidney, aged 6. I believe the children belonged to Phoebe although there is no record of her ever marrying! His second son Arthur was record as an Able Bodied Seaman on the "Lord Waveney", berthed in Lowestoft.
By the time of the 1901 census James had moved to Peasenhall, just down the road from Sibton and his daughter Phoebe and her children were still living with him. Even though James was now 72 years of age, he was still recorded as an agricultural labourer.

James died in the first quarter of 1907 aged 77.
